Today, 27th September 2025, marks 33 years since 18-year-old Gerard O’Hara was murdered by the UFF/UDA in his family home on North Queen Street, Belfast. Gerard was shot in front of his mother, Bridie. His murder devastated the O’Hara family and left a lasting scar on the community.
The family has always known that this was not simply the act of two gunmen. Gerard’s murder was steeped in collusion, with loyalist paramilitaries operating with the tolerance, protection, and assistance of the British State. For more than three decades, the truth of what happened has been resisted not only by those who pulled the trigger, but by those in power who enabled and covered it up.
Last month, RFJ and the O’Hara family released a report on Gerard’s murder. The report outlines the circumstances surrounding his killing, the unanswered questions regarding collusion, and the decades of silence and obstruction the family has faced. It serves as both a record of injustice but also a tribute to Gerard – a son, a brother, an uncle; a young man with his whole life ahead of him. Additionally, it honours Bridie’s legacy, as she fought tirelessly for truth and justice for his son but sadly passed away before achieving that goal.
Relatives for Justice stands with the O’Hara family today. For 33 years, they have shown tremendous courage and determination, ensuring that Gerard’s memory lives on and that the truth cannot be buried. Their dignity and persistence echo the experiences of many other families who continue to challenge silence and denial, especially now, as the British Government continues its efforts to maintain state impunity through ambiguity surrounding the Legacy Act and a lack of good faith regarding legacy matters in general.
