Statement from the family of Danny Cassidy following PONI report

“The family of Danny Cassidy wish to thank the Police Ombudsman for the briefing they received yesterday on her investigation into the RUC in relation to Danny’s murder in Kilrea, Co. Derry in April 1992.

“They note her assessment that the RUC did not make Danny aware of the fact that loyalists were targeting him for assassination. They note her overall conclusions regarding the fact that the RUC had plenty of agents in the North West UDA/UFF (“from top to bottom”) yet little was done to disrupt the activities of that organisation. They are also not surprised that RUC officers deliberately destroyed evidence that would have allowed the Ombudsman to understand precisely what the police did and did not do in relation to the loyalist campaign at that time.

“They were particularly surprised that the PSNI chose the day before the launch of the Ombudsman’s report to arrest someone in relation to Danny’s murder. It is difficult to see this as anything other than a cynical attempt by the police to suggest that that there has been a proper investigation into Danny’s murder.

“Nevertheless, they look forward to a full update from the PSNI as to the state of the investigation. They hope that the other families bereaved through the UDA/UFF campaign will also receive the courtesy of updates on the investigations into the murder of their loved ones.”
