Landmark decision regarding Loughinisland – families vindicated

Speaking after this morning’s decision in the High Court to quash the previous report by the former Ombudsman Al Hutchinson Emma Rogan, the daughter of Adrian Rogan killed in the attack, said:

‘We welcome this decision.

‘The previous report is now binned.

‘ We have been vindicated in our decision to rightly challenge that report which was fundamentally flawed.

‘We also welcome the opportunity to now engage with Dr. Michael Maguire in a more positive and meaningful investigation that is comprehensive, transparent and compliant.

‘We equally hope that this can be completed within a reasonable timeframe.’

Solicitor Niall Murphy added;

‘This is a landmark decision in that it is the first ever case that has been overturned and the families deserve credit for that achievement.

‘There were a number of key failings from the previous investigation and we will be seeking a meeting with Michael Maguire as soon as possible to discuss those failings.

‘It will be our intention to raise key areas that require specific focus of this new investigation including forensic and ballistic evidence.’

RFJ Director Mark Thompson concluded;

‘Today is a good day for justice despite the intentions of those intent of blocking and frustrating the truth from emerging.’

‘We must take the positives from this and move forward with a greater degree of hope that truth and justice can now be delivered.’
